I have just read your blog on the top 10 franchises available. However, my question is every time I hear a franchise is a good one I find an article to the contrary. I wonder is it better to go with a larger more established franchise or should you go with a smaller franchise where you will get more personal attention. I am looking at both at Curves and a franchise called illuminate gym which I found at http://www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php. Obviously, Curves is the better known of the two but there are many claims that Curves is a bad franchise. Where illuminate gym is still small and hungry. Obviously price is also a determining issue… Any thoughts???

Thanks Jill, great question! For the sake of disclosure, Curves has advertised on our site in the past, and this is the first time I’ve heard of Illuminate Gym. So I really don’t have an opinion of which one is better or worse.

The best thing to do is to either purchase or obtain the franchise FDD (Franchise Disclosure Document) which lists all franchisees and all litigation. Then try and contact as many franchisees as you can including those in litigation (the franchisor may give you a list of franchisees to contact, but they will probably only give you the names of their most profitable franchisees).

As far as your larger versus smaller franchises question, check out this article: Large Franchises vs. Small Franchises.

Thanks for the question Jill, I hope this helps… good luck!
